10 Things to Do in Durban (Including One You Have Not Heard Of)
Durban is warm all year, sits on the Indian Ocean, and has the best curry in South Africa. It is also a city people tend to pass through on the way to somewhere else, which is a mistake. Here is what we would actually send a visitor to do — including one stop most people have never heard of.
1. Walk the Golden Mile
Durban's beachfront promenade runs for kilometres along the Indian Ocean, and it is the easiest way to understand the city. Swimmers, surfers, joggers, families, and anglers all share it. Go early, when the light is good and the heat has not arrived yet.
2. Go up Moses Mabhida Stadium
The arch over Moses Mabhida is the city's most recognisable silhouette. You can ride to the top for a view that takes in the harbour, the beachfront and the hills behind the city — worth it on a clear day.
3. Eat a bunny chow
A hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with curry. It is Durban's most famous food and it is not a tourist invention — it is what people actually eat. Every Durbanite has a strong opinion on where to get the best one. Ask, then ignore the advice and try several.
4. Spend a morning at the Durban Botanic Gardens
Africa's oldest surviving botanical garden, and a genuinely peaceful place to lose an hour or two. Free to enter, shaded, and full of birds.
5. Browse the Victoria Street Market
Spices, fabric, crafts and noise. Go for the spice stalls in particular — Durban's Indian community has shaped the city's food more than anything else, and this is where a lot of it starts.
6. Drink and eat your way down Florida Road
Morningside's main strip, lined with restored Victorian houses that now hold restaurants, coffee shops and bars. It is the part of Durban that feels most like a neighbourhood rather than a destination.
7. Visit uShaka Marine World
The aquarium is built into the hull of a recreated shipwreck, and it is the one attraction that reliably works for children and adults equally. Set aside most of a day.
8. Take the promenade at Umhlanga
Twenty minutes north of the city, Umhlanga has a lighthouse, a wooden walkway through coastal bush, and calmer water than the city beaches. It is the easy, pretty half-day.
9. Watch the harbour work
Durban has the busiest port in sub-Saharan Africa. Find a spot near the water and watch the ships queue. It sounds dull. It is not.
10. Have coffee with a rescue cat at MeanKat Cafe
This is the one almost nobody has on their list. MeanKat Cafe in Morningside is Durban's dedicated cat cafe and rescue sanctuary — a real coffee shop where the residents are rescue cats, most of whom are looking for homes.
You book a slot, pay a small entrance fee, and spend an hour with cats who have been pulled out of bad situations, treated, and rehabilitated. Some live there permanently. Many are adoptable, and a good number of visits end with someone filling in an adoption application they did not plan on.
It is a genuinely different hour: quiet, unhurried, and the opposite of a queue-and-photograph attraction. Every coffee, croissant and entrance fee funds the food, vet care and fostering behind it.
Planning your trip
Durban works best if you do not over-schedule it. Pick a beach morning, one indoor thing for the heat of the day, and one meal you have researched properly. Leave space for the rest.
If you want to add the cat cafe to your plans, book a visit — slots are limited by design, so the cats are never overwhelmed.
Every visit funds food, vet care and fostering for Durban's rescue cats.
